Professional Work
Trees dominate my life.
With a degree in Forestry, I meandered to East Africa to work on agroforestry and reforestation projects in Kenya and Sudan. In the last 30 years, I’ve lived in Southeast Asia concentrating on conservation, sustainability and natural resource auditing related to tropical forests and oil palm plantations.
This fieldwork covered a lot of ground from forest management, wildlife studies, biodiversity surveys, social and community welfare, indigenous rights, forest fragmentation, and threatened species, mostly in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Creative Work
There are three main activities that keep my creative soul going strong:
Songwriting: I’ve played basic acoustic guitar for over 40 years. After learning music theory during the pandemic lockdown years, it all came together. I discovered my innate passion for songwriting. So, now in my 60s, it’s time to write songs and pass them on to the universe.
Writing: I started out writing popular science articles for magazines and newspapers. This habit turned into writing essays on environmental, social and political issues, and protest music topics. Now my focus is on mini-books to overcome key problems to inspire creativity projects.
Memoir Writing: There are adventures, mishaps and decisions made along the journey of life. If the memories and lessons of the past have value for the present, then the obligation is clear.
Passion & Purpose
Two elements dominate my decision-making: nature and meaning.
My choices in life relate to a sense of exploration of the world and a natural search for meaning. It has taken me far from home and left me alone on many occasions. I never sought a linear career path; I chose to move to new territory.
Working with trees means you must think about the future. Actions taken today are for the protection and responsible use of natural resources. Extraction at any cost is an injustice to newer generations.
There is nothing on the planet as captivating as a primary rainforest. It is chaos in equilibrium. It is life in a constant struggle for survival and growth.
